Seeing Red

Valentine’s Day is almost here so I decided to write about the color red.

Godiva Chocolate

Red is the color of passion and strength.  The color red is visually stimulating and is often used in restaurants to increase the appetite.  The expression “seeing red” implies the strength and force of this color. Red is dramatic and an  intensely exciting color.  Painting a front door red is considered good luck. For many cultures the color symbolizes strength. If you want to add more heat  and intensity to your surroundings just think of the color of a red hot chili pepper for your inspiration.  I think of Pompeii red when I want to describe the deep orange red color seen there on the many frescoed walls. Red is truly one of the most powerful colors in the spectrum. I suppose that is why Tiger Woods wears a red shirt during the final round of his golf tournaments although I don’t think it has been helping him win. If you are looking to spice up your life put on some red and see what happens.

Smitten with Knittin

After spending last summer in the Pacific Northwest in Portand, Oregon, I became inspired to learn to knit. I’ve got a lot to learn still but I am really enjoying my new hobby. My favorite yarns are the natural fibers like mohair, wool and silk. I love the way the natural fiber yarn feels sliding through the dancing needles. Designing a knitting room on the Olioboard mood board site was a lot of fun. I am already starting to become a yarn collector. And I am smitten with knittin!

Healing the Heart Chakra

Chakras are your power centers located at different points throughout your body from the base of your spine to the top of your head. The word chakra comes from the Sanskrit word chakrum which is the word for wheel which means that these energy centers are always moving. The heart chakra is the fourth chakra and is the area at your heart representing love.  The color green represents  the heart chakra and is a nurturing and calming color. I’ve written about this color before in my post Green with Envy. Here is my latest moodboard with the color green to promote healing of the heart chakra.

Interior Design Trends for 2012

2012 is right around the corner and we couldn’t be more excited about the new year. This year, your resolution may be to spruce up the house and turn over a new leaf. Change up your home decor and stay ahead of the design curve by checking out these interior design trends for 2012.

 Skylights

Skylights that overlook the bathroom vanities are becoming commonplace for the modern home. These natural light fixtures are not only great for the planet but also create a fresh, bright look that can be found at most day spas or other places of serenity.

Rich Fabrics and Colors

Interior comfort and luxury will marry in fabrics and colors as well.  Plush wool, velvet and other shiny fabrics will intermingle with wood, stainless steel and natural stone to create a vibrant look that is neither too garish nor woodsy.  Home decor accessories will be made from natural materials such as dark woods, mirror tiles and semi-precious stones. Designs and other artwork can range from intricate to clever or centerpieces that will definitely have your guests talking.

Once again, rich maroon, emerald, coral and yellow-gold tones will offset light walls to create a vibrant look throughout house plans.  Monotone colors such as light gray, silver tone and white will also be a popular offset or as a way to complement dark-colored modern furniture pieces.

Nature and the Environment

Nature will also play a part in wall coverings as wallpaper and paint designs will have trees, plants and even wild animals.  These designs will be mostly simple, light colors or monotones with subtle imprints.

Travel

International flavor is still very much alive as Asian and Middle Eastern-inspired pieces will still play an integral part in room styling.

Whatever kind of interior you end up choosing for your home, keep in mind that you don’t have to sacrifice comfort for luxury.

Nativities

My Nativity

I purchased this nativity at a wonderful store called Jackalope in Santa Fe, New Mexico several years ago. I believe it was made in Mexico.

Folk Art Creche

A nativity scene may be used to describe any depiction of the Nativity of Jesus in art,but in the sense covered here, also called a crib or manger in the UK and crèche in France (meaning “crib” or “manger” French), it means a three-dimensional commercial or folk art depiction of the birth or birthplace of Jesus,  either sculpted or using two-dimensional (cut-out) figures arranged in a three-dimensional setting.

After his return to Italy from a voyage to Egypt and Acre in 1220, St Francis of Assisi introduced three-dimensional nativity scenes. Some accounts state he used statues or costumed people, but Thomas of Celano, biographer of Francis tells how he only used a straw-filled manger(feeding trough) set between a real ox and donkey. According to Thomas, it was beautiful in its simplicity with the manger acting as the altar for the Christmas Mass. Francis’s first biographer, Brother Tommaso da Celano, says that Francis was merely emulating what he had seen elsewhere in previous years when, in 1223, he asked his friend Giovanni Velita, a nobleman from the nearby town of Greccio, to construct a nativity scene, consisting of the straw-filled manger, ox and donkey, in a cave near the town of Greccio, for a Christmas Eve mass at which Francis preached.
